What is a Chat Tutor?
A Chat Tutor is a monitored AI conversation you design for your students. You choose the role Kai plays and what the activity should focus on; Kai generates learning objectives, guides each student through them by voice or text, and scores how many objectives they met. Every chat is monitored from start to finish, and you're notified if a student says something related to self-harm or inappropriate content.
Creating a Chat Tutor
Click the green + button (or the Chat Tutor card on your Home page) and choose Chat Tutor, then Describe & Create. You can also create one from a PDF, PPT, video/audio file or Google Drive. The page that opens is called Create Monitored Chat.
Under Setting Role, pick how Kai should behave: Tutor on a topic, Chat with historical figure or literary character, Writing Helper, Code Helper, Teach Back, Language Learning or Custom. Click Confirm.
Choose the language for directions and conversation and the Grade Level (required).
Optionally Select file to upload a content file or rubric for the activity.
Under What should this activity focus on? (required), describe your learning objectives (or click Improve this for me to expand them).
Under How should students chat?, keep Voice & Typing or restrict students to one of them.
Optionally Align to Standards (up to 3), then click Create.

Checking it before you assign
The Chat Tutor's page lists the Learning Objectives Kai generated from your description. Use Start Preview under Try out the chat! to talk to Kai exactly as your students will.
Assigning it
Click Assign and choose Quick Start or Custom Settings — the options (start and end time, class and sections, log-in requirement, session attempts, grading and when to show grades) are the same as for an assessment. Then share the join link or QR code from the Stats page (or post to Google Classroom or Canvas on Ultra), or let students find it under Assessments & Chat Tutors in the class.
Tip: Students don't need a subscription to use a Chat Tutor you assign — AI on teacher-created materials is free for them.
