Knowt Play game modes and settings

How Classic, Race, Clash, Blitz and Survival work, and the settings you can change for each.

Choosing a mode

Pick a mode in the Game options panel of the lobby. Click the ⓘ next to any mode for a one-line description. Every mode uses the questions from your assessment, flashcard set or note.

Classic

The standard quiz. The host screen shows each question and its answer choices with a countdown; students see the coloured answer tiles on their own device and pick one. After each question everyone sees the answer breakdown, and correct answers earn points and build a streak.

  • Allow students to join late

  • Account required to join

  • Question Types — how many Multiple Choice, True/False and Short Answer (for flashcard sets and notes)

  • Time/question (seconds)

  • How would you like to play? — Answer with term / Answer with definition

Race

Players compete to correctly answer all the questions first — a mistake resets you. Play as individuals or in teams.

  • Individual / Team

  • Allow students to join late

  • Number of questions

Clash

An in-person, board-style game — no joining needed. Teams take turns choosing a category and point value; answer correctly to earn the points, and if you're wrong the other team can steal. Set up your teams on the host screen before you start.

  • Board Size (for example 3 × 3)

  • Teams — click Add Team and name them

Blitz

A timed sprint: players compete to correctly answer the most questions in the allotted time. Individual or team.

  • Individual / Team

  • Allow students to join late

  • Time (minutes)

  • Number of questions

Survival

Like Classic, but participants are eliminated when they answer incorrectly. Last players standing win.

  • Allow students to join late

  • Number of questions

  • Time/question (seconds)

Question types

Games built from flashcard sets and notes let you choose the question types. Games built from an assessment use the assessment's questions as written — to change them, exit the lobby and edit the assessment.
